Report has it that on Tuesday ,the Federal Government proposed a new minimum wage of N54,000 following a walkout by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress during the last meeting, where the government had proposed N48,000. This is according to a source who has claimed anonymity.
This proposal is still significantly lower than the N615,000 demanded by the unions and it is unsure if the Union leaders will agree to it.
Citing the current economic conditions, NLC President Joe Ajaero insisted on the higher amount, saying that the government’s proposal of a paltry N48,000 as the minimum wage does not only insult the sensibilities of Nigerian workers but also falls significantly short of meeting their needs and aspirations.
The Director-General of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, has earlier urged union leaders to return to negotiations.
The last review of the minimum wage was in 2018, and the new proposal aims to address the economic realities facing Nigerian workers.
