The Lagos State Government, led by Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has declared an instant ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab cited environmental concerns as the driving force behind the decision, emphasizing the detrimental impact of non-biodegradable Styrofoam on drainage channels and the overall environment.

Wahab noted
the consistent clogging of drainage channels despite regular cleaning efforts, attributing a significant portion of littering on major roads and markets to Styrofoam. He emphasized the state’s commitment to preventing the continuous degradation of its environment, particularly given its coastal nature.

LAWMA and the Kick Against Indiscipline have been directed to swiftly implement the ban, including crackdowns on production companies and distribution outlets for Styrofoam to curb further distribution.

Wahab highlights lexisting lawssupporting the ban, including the National Environmental (Sanitation and Waste Control) Regulation 2009 and the 2017 State Environmental Management and Protection Law. The Commissioner urges compliance with these regulations, warning of heavy fines, penalties, and potential premises sealing for non-compliance.

Producers, distributors, and end-users are urged to seek alternatives to Styrofoam or face consequences. Wahab stressed that the economic interests of a few should not outweigh the well-being of millions of Lagosians affected by the indiscriminate dumping of single-use plastics.

He outlined the severe consequences of such waste, including climate change, flooding, and diseases like cholera. Residents are encouraged to boycott Styrofoam and single-use plastics, opting for reusable containers for food and drinks.

Wahab concluded by appealing for collective responsibility, stating, that the convenience of single-use plastic comes at a huge cost to society.
