The Lawmaker, representing Nnewi/North/South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, Honourable Chris Azubogu, has called on Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on over 250 erosion sites in Anambra State.
Azubogu made the call when he visited the ongoing Obiofia Ichi erosion control project he facilitated in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state, over the weekend.
Reports gathered that the Obiofia Ichi erosion control project is one of the Lawmaker’s facilitated federal projects to Anambra State.
Speaking to the project contractor upon his arrival Azubogu admonished the contractor on the need to do a comprehensive job that will end the erosion havoc in Obiofia Ichi as the Erosion site represents one of the 250 erosion sites in Anambra State. And according to him, Ichi erosion has eaten people’s homes but he expressed optimism that with the ongoing erosion control project which he is facilitating, they will save the community from the further threat of erosion.
Explaining, Hon. Chris reiterated that his interest in erosion menace in Anambra State is to curtail it’s damages, recover land spacey from what he called ‘ecological terrorism’ as well as prevent new ones. He revealed that the state accounts for about 250 active erosion sites which is a major challenge to keep on pushing for his constituency to resolve the ones in their areas. He also hinted that himself and his Honorable colleagues from the State have stood on the floor of the National Assembly, moved motions, and knocked on doors to see how they can best handle the Anambra erosion havoc though they have achieved very little success.
He then pledged that they must continue to call for support on tackling Anambra erosion challenges from everywhere as The danger in erosion havoc is that residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural land space is being eaten up by this menace.
Azubogu further called for the declaration of State of Emergency on over 250 Anambra erosion sites from the Nigerian Government, at all levels with support from the international community and all men and women of goodwill as the state only occupys about 4,865 square kilometres of land space which has erosion eat deep daily unfortunately.
