Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Petitions has cautioned feuding parties in land dispute between Maryland Estate and Ezi Nkwelle Village to maintain peace.
They were also cautioned to maintain the status quo, pending the resolution of the matter in a competent court of law
The parties are both from the Oyi Local Government Area (LGA).
The committee stressed that it would visit the site with only counsels to the parties, their chairmen, consultant of the House and the Member representing Oyi constituency, Mr Charles Obimma for on-the-spot assessment.
Chairman of the Committee and member representing Orumba North Constituency, Mr Emeka Aforka said this when the parties appeared before the committee following petition by Maryland Estate that people of Ezi Nkwelle Village were destroying their buildings in the area.
He told Ezi Nkwelle people to cease destroying property on Maryland Estate, pending the resolution of the matter.
The petitioner, Maryland Landlord Association, represented by Mr Hyacinth Nodebechukwu Muoghalu, a lawyer, expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the meeting, praying that the peace so witnessed in the deliberation should continue to exist in the area.
He noted that his clients were not contesting ownership of the land on which they had been developing since 2006, but urged their opponents to settle out of court, instead of pulling down the structures already standing in the area.
Mr Muoghalu, however, alleged that some unknown security agencies might have been compromised as that could explain why demolitions could not be averted.
A member representing Oyi Constituency, Mr Charles Obimma said hooliganism, violence and destruction of people’s property were not the best way in resolving problems but rather through the courts.
