Still on health, the Sun has been listed as the best source of Vitamin D .

In an article by Dr Ryan Raman on Health line, Vitamin D is made from the cholesterol in the skin when it is exposed to the sun which makes getting exposed to enough sunlight necessary for optimal vitamin D levels.

Dr Ryan explained that when the sun’s ultraviolet B , also known as UVB rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, it provides energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur.

He also said the vitamin D instructs the cells in the gut to absorb calcium and phosphorus , essential for maintaining strong and healthy bones.

He further advised that it is best to get Vitamin D at midday as the sun is at its highest point and it’s UVB rays are most intense at noon and this signifies that one needs less time in the sun to make sufficient vitamin D . He pointed out that a study has shown that afternoon sun exposure is likely to increase the risk of dangerous skin cancers.

He further stated that dark skin people may need anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours longer to get sufficient Vitamin D because of the melanin which protects the skin against damage , which can also prevent the body from getting enough Vitamin D from the sun. The melanin also acts as a natural sunscreen and absorbs the sun’s UV rays to defend against sun burn and skin cancers.
