MEDICS Demand Govt’s Commitment Towards Improved Health Care Delivery In Nigeria

Anambra Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has reaffirmed government’s commitment towards partnering with doctors in the state to achieve health for all.
Dr. Obidike affirmed government’s position on quality health care delivery while flagging off this year’s Physicians Week organized by the Awka Zone of the Nigerian Medical Association at the NMA Secretariat in Awka.
The Commissioner who Spoke on the theme of the Conference, “Nigeria’s Health Care Delivery System And The 2023 Democratic Transition: A Time To Change The Narrative’, noted the imperatives of establishing sound healthcare delivery system in Nigeria to improve its healthcare delivery blueprint.
He asserted that Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration is committed to improved health care services in the state, and commended the state NMA for its determination on quality health care service.
In her message, the State NMA Chairman, Dr. Jane Ezeonu, described the theme of the conference as apt, stating that it aimed at placing the health care delivery system to respond to critical changes being expected next year.
Dr. Ezeonu, spoke on the tragedy of the nation’s braindrain occasioned by lack of enabling environment for medical practitioners to to put in their best, such as lack of hospital equipment, and incentives to motivate doctors.
The Chairman called for upgrading of all medical facilities to attract doctors in the diaspora to think home.
Dr Ezeonu commended the Heealth Commissioner, Dr. Obidike, for his sound healthcare programme and affirmed NMA’S sustained partnership with the state government.
On his part, a former Awka Zonal Chairman of the NMA, Dr.Oliver Onwughalu, also decried the shortage of manpower in the medical profession, lack of hospital equipment, lack of enabling working environment, etc.
Dr. Onwughalu called for provision of soft loans to doctors in private practice to purchase necessary equipment to equip their hospitals.
Also in his message, a another Awka Zonal Chairman of the association, Dr. Johnson Ezedinachi, called for improvement of the universal health coverage in Nigeria for the citizenry.
Dr Ezedinachi advocated the formulation laws that will make every citizenry healthcare insurance compliant, regretting that most Nigerians have not registered under the healthcare insurance policy.
The medical expert expressed delight that by next year, Keke and Okada operators in the state will be covered under the health insurance policy.
The Awka Zonal Chairman of the NMA, Dr Emma Umenweke, expects governments at all level to budget substantially for health and to do everything possible to ensure that the environment in the country is conducive for the practice of medicine.
In a vote of thanks, the Awka Zonal Chairman of the 2022 Physicians Week, Dr. Dim Basil, appreciated all doctors and stakeholders who ensured the success of the NMA’S Scientific Conference
He called on doctors to redouble their efforts to promote the activities of the association.
