Two unidentified revenue collectors of the Anambra State Government have been set ablaze by an angry mob for causing a tipper driver to ram into and kill a bystander at Old Market Road, along Venn Road by Egerton Bus Stop in Onitsha.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, caused heavy chaos and confusion, thereby leading to gridlock in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the tipper driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the bystander as the revenue touts were dragging the steering wheel with him.
An eyewitness report by a trader in the area said that the Revenue men were dragging steering with a tipper driver because he refused to bribe them and in the process, the vehicle ran over an innocent man. Seeing the result of their action, they tried to run away, but two were caught while four others escaped.
The Chairman of Anambra Tippers Drivers Association, Ebuka Unekwe, who also confirmed the development, lamented that the revenue collectors had been a pain to members of the association in the last two years.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development, saying the police responded swiftly to bring the situation under control, however, more investigations are ongoing to ascertain what happened and find an amicable solution to such, especially on future occurrences.
