Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala has said that the introduction of Mobile Health Insurance in Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) is a new dawn in the healthcare sector towards effective healthcare financing.
Dr Okpala said this while declaring open a Pre-testing and Training on the use of Mobile Technology for Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Staff members and Healthcare providers at the Prof Kenneth Dike State Library Auditorium, Awka.
The commissioner commended the State Government for the continued support to the health sector of the state that has enabled the people of the state to enjoy quality and affordable healthcare services.
The Honorable commissioner who couldn’t hide his excitement declared that It is truly an honour to identify with the progress we are currently experiencing in the state, commended The Executive Secretary of ASHIA who according to him, has done a good job in the healthcare sector of the state. Explaining, he said that he was happy that at this point in time we have a health economist heading the agency who is not just a health economist but somebody that is a field man, who his innovative ideas at ASHIA have birthed the new mobile health insurance.
Dr. Okpala further explained that mobile health insurance is a new digital innovation that has made it possible for people to enroll into the health insurance scheme using either their phone numbers or mobile application without stress.
Executive Secretary ASHIA, Dr Simeon Onyemaechi, revealed that the mobile Insurance was introduced to enable more persons to be adopted into the scheme by men and women of goodwill in the society, and advised corporate organisations in search of an objective avenue for corporate social responsibility to enroll the less privileged into the scheme using the Mobile Adoption platform.
Dr Onyemaechi, who is the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Health matters, also said that the Agency developed the mobile adoption tree with full support of the European Union (UN) and World Health Organisation (WHO), With the collaboration of the National Social Safety Coordinating Office of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and enumerated the vulnerable members of our communities using the World Bank community based approach.
While noting that the platform also enables people to pay their ASHIA premium in installments using an electronic wallet system that would save their contributions until the required amount is completed, posited that This is a major revolution in the Health Insurance business in Nigeria for which we are grateful to the EU and WHO for making it a reality.
