Over 20,000 Nigeria young girls and boys, particularly girls are currently stranded in Mali.
Edo State Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Mr Nduka Nwawene made this known on the occassion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons in Benin City, Edo State. He said that in the past, Mali was a destination for trafficked victims from the Benin Zone, but now Malians are being trafficked to Benin City.
Nwawene emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to raise awareness and combat human trafficking.
The zonal commander who spoke after a road walk through some major roads in Benin, revealed that in the midst of the escalating trafficking issues, global, national responses, particularly in developing States, appeared to be deteriorating.
Ms. Ann Ojugo, the Edo Chairperson of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) , mentioned that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) are increasingly becoming victims of trafficking and exploitation due to their limited access to information.
She pointed out that people traffic PWDs from rural areas to the cities for exploitation. She noted that some PWDs in Nigeria are promised greener pasture abroad but they end up being duped and exploited.
The event was organized by NAPTIP Edo Command in collaboration with various organizations, including the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
