Mpox cases are on the rise in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with over 16,700 infections and more than 570 deaths reported this year.
Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba has declared the situation a continental emergency as the country awaits vaccines from the United States and Japan.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the surge in Mpox cases a global public health emergency, urging affected countries to step up vaccination efforts.
Outbreaks have also been reported in neighboring countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.
The DRC is expecting 50,000 vaccine doses from the U.S. and 3.5 million doses from Japan, aimed primarily at children. The government plans to vaccinate four million people, including 3.5 million children. Minister Kamba emphasized the importance of vaccination as a solution to the ongoing crisis.
