Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra governor, has expressed hope that the imminent arrival of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in the state will mark the end of the dangerous disease.
In a message kicking off Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in Anambra State, Mrs. Soludo emphasized the significance of raising awareness and educating the public about the prevalence and threat of cervical cancer, the fourth commonest cancer among women globally.
Mrs. Soludo announced the impending arrival of the HPV vaccine, noting its role in complementing existing efforts by the administration to combat the disease.
While awaiting the vaccine, she stresses the need to continue raising awareness about the existential threat of cervical cancer, urging women to prioritize regular check-ups for early detection.
Highlighting the importance of a strategic approach, Mrs. Soludo called for extending cervical cancer education beyond digital platforms to reach rural communities. She addressed the phobia and stigma associated with the disease, emphasizing its treatability and urging a shift in perception.
Mrs. Soludo revealed a partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), resulting in over 5000 women screened free of charge, with positive cases treated at no cost. The intervention is expanding to reach more women, especially in rural areas.
As a Cervical Cancer Ambassador, Mrs. Soludo appealled to women and girls in their reproductive age to prioritize screening, emphasizing that early diagnosis ensures effective treatment.
