After five months of intense manhunt by operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Henry Okamaru, popularly known as Lawrence IK Okamaru has been arrested in Ondo state.
The wanted drug kingpin is said to be behind the 2,000.6 kg of cannabis sativa seized in a concrete mixer truck in Adamawa state in December 2021.
Earlier in December, two suspects were arrested in connection with the consignment.
In a statement released on Sunday by the NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi , Okamaru is one of the leaders of a cannabis cultivation cartel that operates in the Ondo-Ekiti axis and transits between Osun, Ondi, Ekiti, Edo and Delta states from where he oversees supplies of illicit consignments to the northern part of the country and Lagos state.
Babafemi also stated that the suspect has also been pinpointed as a member of an international drug trafficking ring and operates between Nigerian and South Africa.
In another arrest, a 36 year old Italian based Nigerian, Nwakanma Uche has been arrested by operatives of NDLEA at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja for injesting pellets of heroin. Nwakanma was caught while he was about to board Air France Airline to Milan , Italy on Sunday, May 15 ,2022 . He was kept under strict observation while he excreted 95 pellets of the illicit drug. He said he was to be paid 1.5 million naira if he had successfully delivered the drugs in Milan.
