In a major operation, the Nigerian Army has rescued 386 civilians, mostly women and children, from the Sambisa forest. The operation, dubbed “Operation Desert Sanity III”, aimed to clear the forest of remnants of terrorists and provide an opportunity for those willing to surrender.
Brig. Gen. AGL Haruna, the acting GOC 7 Division, stated that the 10-day operation involved troops from the 21 Special Armoured Brigade, 26 Task Force Brigade, and 199 Special Forces. He expressed confidence that the number of rescued civilians would continue to rise.
Some of those rescued revealed that they had been held captive for the past 10 years. The GOC commended the troops for their performance and professionalism during the operation and urged them to maintain the momentum.
The rescue operation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to secure the region and reunite families who have been separated due to the conflict.
