Nigeria on Friday kick-started the administration of COVID-19 booster shots to fully vaccinated individuals in response to the Federal Government’s review of the country’s vaccination programme following the detection of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Nigeria.
According to the Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA), Faisal Shuaib, during the flag-off of vaccination for Internally Displaced Persons on Thursday, those eligible for the booster jabs include persons 18 years and above and fully vaccinated with either two doses of AstraZeneca, Moderna or Pfizer Bio-N-Tech or a single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
He added that the time interval before the booster dose was at least six months for AstraZeneca, Moderna, while the Johnson and Johnson vaccine requires a time interval of at least two months.
Urging those eligible to walk into the nearest vaccination site for their booster doses from Friday, he indicated that so far 6.6% of the eligible population had gotten a single dose, while 3.4% had been fully vaccinated.
Recall that earlier in the week, the US donated 2.5 million Pfizer vaccine doses to Nigeria, a move expected to further boost vaccination drive in the country.
