The Nigerian government
has expressed regret over the decision of three ECOWAS member states to exit the bloc. According to a statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Francisca Omayuli reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to ECOWAS’s objectives of fostering peace, prosperity, and democracy in the region.
The statement underscored the significance of adhering to due process and safeguarding the rights and well-being of citizens across member states.
Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso declared their withdrawal from ECOWAS, attributing it to what they deem as unjust and harsh sanctions imposed on them post recent coups. They accused ECOWAS of straying from its original principles and failing to adequately defend its members.
Nevertheless, the withdrawal announcement was criticized for not following the prescribed procedure outlined in the ECOWAS charter. ECOWAS, led by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, disclosed that as of Sunday, they had not officially received any notice of withdrawal from the concerned member states.
