The Federal Government has shut down an illegal gold mine in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, announced on Friday that this action is part of efforts to combat illegal mining and boost Nigeria’s economic profile.
The operation, led by Mining Marshals, dislodged illegal miners who had been preventing licensed miners from accessing the site for 16 years. Seven suspects were arrested during the raid.
Site workers have been given five days to vacate the area, and efforts to secure the site for lawful mining activities are underway.
This follows the recent arrest of eight Chinese nationals for illegal mining in Abia State.
