The Nigerian Senate has called on Libya to apologize for the mistreatment of the Super Eagles football team at Al Abaq Airport. This follows a series of distressing events where the team was held for over 20 hours without food or water after their flight was diverted.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the actions of Libyan authorities, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation and potential penalties. Senator Ismaila Kawu highlighted the dangers posed to the players and urged the Federal Government to address the diplomatic fallout.
The Nigerian Football Federation previously reported that the team’s treatment was linked to grievances from a prior match in Nigeria. Akpabio described the incident as a violation of sportsmanship and human dignity, calling for accountability from Libyan officials.
CAF has also stated that it will investigate the matter, reflecting ongoing tensions between the two nations as Nigeria prepares to withdraw from the scheduled AFCON qualifier against Libya.
