Report from Nigeria Center For Disease Control, NCDC has it that Nigeria has recorded 10 cases of the Delta Covid-19 variant.

The Director –General of the Center, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu revealed this at the ministerial briefing in Abuja yesterday. Represented by Director of Disease Surveillance Department, Mrs Elsie Ilori at the briefing, Dr Ihekweazu said that with sequencing efforts, the Center has detected 10 cases which are confirmed to be the Delta Variant.

He also stated that they are working hard to endure genomic surveillance of travellers’ samples and to scale up their genomic sequencing capacity.

The NCDC, he said is also scaling up their testing capability by the roll out of rapid Diagnostic Test Kits in selected states nationwide.

He also said that they are encouraging congregate settings, such as hospitals, schools, workplaces and correctional facilities to take advantage of the WHO approved RTDs kits to detect cases promptly.
He noted that the rise in the Delta variant should serve as a strong warning to be even more on guard regarding reducing the risk of covid19 spread, especially as the Delta variant is more transmissible.

He also said that to improve surveillance of covid19 cases in the country, the agency has embarked on training.

In a related development, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire has called out Nigeria as a country that will likely face high incidences of the Delta variant of Covid-19. He attributed it to neglect of preventive measures at Airports and other points of entry into the country.

Ehanire lamented that passengers were absconding quarantine at all points of entry, not minding the evidence of a third wave of the virus in the country.

He also showed concerns that citizens had refused to agree to public health advisories which also includes non pharmaceutical measures against the virus such as hand washing, wearing face mask, maintain social distance etc.

He also warned that the severity of the disease should not be disregarded as it is still a primary cause of concern, even in countries with stronger health systems.

He urged everyone to comply with the Port Health staff or risk facing sections, which include prosecution as non compliance to their directives constitutes a s risk to national health security and will be handled with commensurate severity.

Delta Variant has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as a variant of concern , given its increased transmissibility.
