The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, is calling for the immediate reversal of the recent petrol price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
The NNPCL recently increased the pump price of petrol from ₦568 to between ₦855 and ₦897 per liter, depending on the location.
NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned this decision, saying it has worsened the hardship faced by Nigerians amidst ongoing fuel scarcity.
Ajaero criticized the Federal Government, accusing it of betraying the labor movement and failing to implement the new national minimum wage of ₦70,000. He also demanded an end to what he described as the government’s oppressive policies, including a 250% increase in electricity tariffs and arbitrary arrests of citizens.
He further accused the government of being insincere, recalling a previous offer from President Bola Tinubu of a minimum wage increase in exchange for higher fuel prices, which the labor union rejected due to its potential negative impact on Nigerians.
The NLC is urging the government to reconsider these economic policies and provide relief for struggling citizens.
