The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, may soon regain his freedom as indications emerge that President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is considering his release under amnesty on October 1, a source who pleaded anonymity has said.
Kanu’s continued detention has sparked widespread concerns, prompting numerous stakeholders to appeal to President Tinubu for a political solution to the situation.
Notable Igbo leaders, including the late Mbazulike Amaechi and Chukwuemeka Ezeife, had previously met with former President Muhammadu Buhari to secure Kanu’s release.
Although Buhari gave assurances, he failed to fulfill his commitments before leaving office on May 29, 2023.
One of the key arguments for Kanu’s release is that the court has discharged him of all treasonable offenses, allowing him to continue his trial without detention.
