The Federal Government has refuted claims that the Russian Government is conscripting Nigerian and other African students to participate in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine in exchange for visa renewals.
Reports emerged on Monday alleging that African students, including Nigerians, were being coerced into joining the Russian military to secure visa renewals. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement late Tuesday denying these claims.
The Ministry stated that the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow has been in close contact with the Nigerian Students Association in Russia, and no cases of conscription have been reported. The Ministry described the reports as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard them.
Bloomberg had previously reported allegations that Russia was using coercive tactics to recruit migrants and foreign students, including Nigerians, to fight in the war. However, the Nigerian government has firmly dismissed these claims.
