Chinese tech giant Baidu has launched a new artificial intelligence reasoning model, X1, and made its AI chatbot services free for users amid rising competition in the industry.

In a WeChat post on Sunday, Baidu stated that its X1 model performs similarly to DeepSeek’s but at a lower cost. Additionally, the company introduced Ernie 4.5, its latest foundation model, and announced that Ernie Bot, its AI chatbot, will be free for individuals two weeks ahead of schedule.

Baidu was one of China’s first companies to roll out a generative AI platform in 2023. However, rivals such as ByteDance and Moonshot AI have since gained a larger user base.

Baidu also confirmed plans to open-source its Ernie AI models from June 30.
