On The Foreign Scene

Iran launched its first-ever direct attack targeting Israeli territory in retaliation for a deadly airstrike, widely attributed to Israel, which destroyed its consular building in Syria’s capital earlier this month.

Israeli defense systems, alongside its allies, intercepted most of the incoming projectiles. The Israeli army reported 12 injuries but no fatalities. However, the attack has significantly increased concerns about a potential Israeli retaliation.

Leaders of the G7 nations have strongly condemned Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel and called for restraint from all sides.

European Council President Charles Michel, in a statement on social media, emphasized the unanimous condemnation of Iran’s actions during video talks. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to de-escalate the situation and stressed the importance of ending the crisis in Gaza through an immediate ceasefire.

The G7 leaders expressed their full support for Israel and indicated readiness to take further measures in response to any further destabilizing actions. They reiterated their commitment to stabilizing the situation and avoiding further escalation, demanding that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks. The statement was published by the Italian G7 presidency following a video meeting.

The United States, Israel’s top ally, has also urged caution and calm in response to the escalating tensions. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized that they are not seeking a broader conflict with Iran and aim to prevent further escalation.
