Russia has criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to create a “Star Wars”-like missile defence system, calling it a step toward turning space into a battleground.
The plan, which aims to counter ballistic and hypersonic missile threats, mirrors Reagan’s “Star Wars” program and includes deploying interceptors in space.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the initiative undermines Russian and Chinese deterrence capabilities and increases global tensions. The “Iron Dome for America,” modelled after Israel’s defence system, addresses different missile threats than Israel’s system.
Moscow and Washington have long accused each other of weaponizing space, with Russia unveiling its hypersonic missile, “Oreshnik,” and the U.S. reporting Russian space-based weapons deployments.
