On the Foreign Scene,

Colombia’s left-wing President Gustavo Petro on Sunday, said that he would not allow United States migrant deportation flights access to his country’s airspace.

Speaking via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Petro added that they would only be accepted once Washington had created a protocol ensuring the “dignified treatment” of the migrants.

In a later post, Petro added that he had “turned back United States military planes that were coming with Colombian migrants,” without giving further details.

Petro’s remarks come a day after Brazil’s government similarly expressed outrage at the administration of new US president Donald Trump over the treatment of dozens of Brazilians deported from the United States.

In reaction to this, the United States President,  Donald Trump announced via his Truth Social, the imposition of tariffs of 25 per cent on Colombian products that would rise to 50 per cent in a week, as well as a travel ban and “immediate visa revocations” on Colombian government officials, allies and supporters.
