On Friday, a fight erupted in Turkey’s parliament during discussions on the case of jailed opposition figure Can Atalay, who had been controversially stripped of his parliamentary immunity.
The scuffle began when Ahmet Sik, a member of the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP), defended Atalay against accusations from ruling party lawmakers, prompting a heated exchange.
The situation escalated when former footballer and AKP lawmaker Alpay Ozalan attacked Sik, leading to a physical altercation that left at least two opposition MPs injured.
The incident follows Turkey’s constitutional court’s recent ruling that declared Atalay’s removal from parliament “null and void.” Atalay, who campaigned from prison for his parliamentary seat, was ousted in January following his conviction in a controversial trial.
The ruling AKP’s actions against opposition figures have sparked tensions and raised concerns about Turkey’s democratic processes. The main opposition CHP party condemned the violence, calling it a shameful episode in Turkish parliamentary history.
