In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration is set to raise university tuition fees for the first time in eight years, starting in September 2025.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson will soon announce the increase, aligning it with the Retail Price Index inflation rate, according to The Telegraph.
The planned hike will impact current A-level students applying for university, with fees rising above the current £9,250 cap, which has been frozen since 2017.
The Labour government is expected to announce only a modest increase for next year, with an option to adjust the system further in the future. This comes amid rising financial concerns, as 40% of English universities face deficits, worsened by a drop in international students following visa restrictions.
Elite institutions like the Russell Group argue that capped fees are causing them to lose around £4,000 per UK student. Phillipson’s announcement marks an initial step toward a broader overhaul of university funding.
