The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya, scheduled for October 15, will not take place as planned. This decision follows a series of distressing events involving the Super Eagles, who were held at Al Abaq Airport in Libya for over 20 hours without food or water.
CAF expressed its dismay at the “disturbing and unacceptable experiences” faced by the Nigerian team, which included being diverted to an airport far from their intended destination. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) reported that the team was treated poorly by Libyan authorities, leading to their withdrawal from the match.
In response to the incident, CAF has referred the matter to its disciplinary board for investigation. The NFF has called for accountability and sanctions against those responsible for the team’s ordeal. This situation highlights ongoing tensions between the two football federations and raises concerns about the treatment of visiting teams in international competitions.
