The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has emphasized the urgent need to develop sports in Nigeria, stating that the newly appointed management is racing against time to elevate the sector.

Speaking at the 9th Convocation Ceremony and 50th Anniversary of the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Lagos, Dikko highlighted the importance of infrastructure and training for athletes to boost the country’s sports sector.

He also spoke about repositioning sports to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy, aiming for sports to contribute at least 3% to the nation’s GDP and engage three million people in various sports categories.

Dikko praised the recent improvements at NIS and the collaboration with the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) to enhance grassroots sports development. He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to restructure the sports sector, creating a framework to drive sustainable growth and talent development.

The NSC aims to transform sports into a key economic asset, focusing on both grassroots development and high-level competition.
