Over 150 families protest, accuse morticians of burning corpses after selling private parts
Over 150 families gathered at the General Hospital, Onitsha, morgue requesting that the bodies of their dead loved ones be delivered to them for burial were still stranded and confused as of Friday, 28th January, 2022.
This Followed fire incident that burnt 400 corpses to ashes at the mortuary about seven days ago.
The family members who showed the receipts issued to them by the hospital management insisted that their relations’ bodies must be released as deposited.
They alleged that the morticians set the bodies ablaze after they must have removed some of their body parts like the private parts for sale.
They appealed to government to unravel the mystery behind the fire incident.
Newsmen who visited the morgue observed that heaps of corpses were laid outside the premises, not minding the health implications.
It was also reported that the morticians were hostile and aggressive, refusing to give reasons why the heaps of bodies were left there even as patients who came for medical attention were being exposed to further health hazards.
One of the most devastating scenarios was a widow simply known as Mrs Okorie, who was shouting and wailing.
She claimed that she deposited the body of her dead son at the morgue two months ago, but could no longer identify him because the corpse had been burnt beyond recognition.
She called on the government to investigate the matter and take necessarily actions
