As political parties continue to make plans about how to take the Anambra governorship seat in the 2025 election which comes up on November 8, one party which has in previous years dominated the political space in the state is missing.
That political party is the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
In the 2021 governorship election in the state, the party fielded the highest number of aspirants, 10 in number, including some of the best politicians in the state.
The aspirants included: Hon Uche Ekwunife, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Hon Chris Azugbogu, Mr Winston Udeh and Mr Valentine Ozigbo. Others were Mrs Chidi Onyemelukwe, Hon Ifedi Okwenna, Hon Tony Nwoye, Mr Walter Okeke and Mr Godwin Ezeemo.
The above politicians consisted of some of the wealthiest in the state, and the power play that took place during the party’s primary election which was held at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre shook the state.
As the Anambra governorship election comes up, the party is all but out of the race as the deadline for its sale of nomination and expression of interest forms comes to an end, registering just one aspirant, a little known Hon. Jude Ezenwafor, who has been described as a proxy.
During a recent visit to the PDP secretariat at Udoka Housing Estate in Awka, checks showed that at a time when many party offices are bubbling with activities, including rallies and nocturnal meetings, the secretariat of PDP in Anambra State is overgrown with weed, while tables in the party hall and many offices were overtaken by dust
