Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s democracy, saying it’s fast losing its essence due to widespread poverty. In a post on his X handle, Obi revealed that over 100 million Nigerians live in absolute poverty, with 150 million facing multidimensional poverty. He stressed that democracy must address critical needs like health, education, and poverty alleviation to remain relevant.
Obi called on leaders to strengthen independent institutions, deliver economic progress, and prioritize governance that benefits the people. He warned that without trust, robust institutions, and a commitment to welfare, democracy in Africa remains fragile.
This comes amid rising coups across the continent and growing global concerns about the stability of democratic systems.
