Anambra State Police Command says it arrested a total of 80 suspected cultists in August, this year.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, who disclosed this in Awka, said, in order to stem the tide of cultism and other nefarious activities in Anambra State especially during this ember months, the Command Special Anti-Cult Unit(SPACS) had, during the period under review, raided various hideouts and blackspots where cultists are suspected to be hibernating at various locations within the State.
According to the PPRO, on 1st August, at Ogidi /Nkpor axis, 15 suspected cultists were arrested, while on the 2nd, 6 suspected cultists were arrested at Awka /Amansea axis,
He said on the 3rd of last month 5 suspected cultists were nabbed at Onitsha /Nkpor axis, while on 4th, at Oba/Nnewi axis, 7 suspected cultists were also arrested.
Speaking further, Haruna Mohammed hinted that on the 5th , at Nsugbe/Nkwelle-ezunaka axis , 6 suspected cultists were arrested, and also on the 6th of August, at Ogbunike/Abagana axis , 8 of them were arrested.
The PPRO informed that on the 7th, 4 suspected cultists were nabbed at Nawfia, and on the 8th, at Nimo/Abagana axis, 4 were arrested.
Furthermore, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, on the 9th, of last month, at Ifitedunu /Awkuzu axis, 12 suspected cultists were arrested while on the 10th of the same month, at Amikwo Awka, 4 suspected cultists were arrested.
He further briefed that on the 14th of last month, at Nsugbe/3-3 axis, 5 suspected cultists were arrested while on the 15th at Ebenebe /Ugbenu axis, four of them were also arrested.
Haruna Mohammed pointed out that of the 80 suspects arrested, 40 were charged to Court,15 of them were screened and released unconditionally, while 5 of them were placed under police supervision for being under aged.
He also disclosed that 20 suspects including a sixteen year old confessed being cultists, and one Echezoma Metu who was arrested with a double barrel gun inside his school compound at Igboukwu are undergoing investigation.
Meanwhile, exhibits recovered from the suspects include,Two pump action, ten machetes , five axes, two daggers, three barrettes, one double barrel gun, 2 locally made pistol and 3 live cartridges.
Reacting to the arrests, the State Commissioner of Police, CP John Abang, thanked “Ndi Anambra” for providing the Command with actionable intelligence and reassures the public of adequate protection.
The CP further urged all Ndi Anambra and residents alike to report any suspicious persons or objects to the nearest Police Station or call police emergency number 07039194332 for prompt response.
