In his weekly general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday, Pope Francis spoke about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence in preparation for the World Communication Day which held on Sunday 12th May. The pontiff urged people to maintain a spiritual perspective to help keep AI in its proper place as a tool to serve humanity.

Pope Francis warned that AI has the potential to keep people in an environment where they are only surrounded by views or ideas similar to their own. This could prevent people from grasping the more complex, multicultural reality of society around them.

The pope stressed the importance of maintaining a spiritual way of viewing the world. He said that only with this perspective can people help AI or any technology to keep its proper place, which is meant to be of service to the growth of humanity.

He also said that wisdom, a gift of the Holy Spirit, is what the pope said is needed to properly guide the development and use of AI.

The pontiff’s remarks come as AI systems are becoming increasingly advanced and integrated into many aspects of modern life. His message underscores the need to thoughtfully consider the societal and spiritual implications of this rapidly evolving technology.

His words offer a moral and philosophical framework for navigating the complex issues surrounding artificial intelligence.

World Communications Day was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 as an annual celebration that encourages us to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that the modern means of social communication (the press, motions pictures, radio, television and the internet) afford the Church to communicate the gospel message.
