It was a heartbreaking news for sprint lovers on Friday, as American sprint sensation, Sha’Carri Richardson confirmed that she tested positive for marijuana at the US Olympic athletics trials and will be barred from the 100m at the Tokyo Games.
Speaking on US Olympic telecaster, NBC’s “Today” show, the 21-year-old Richardson said she took marijuana to cope with emotional pain after learning of the death of her biological mother from a reporter at the US Olympic trials last month in Eugene, Oregon.
Meanwhile, the US Anti-Doping Agency also announced that Richardson had accepted a one-month ban from June 28, meaning her 100m victory at the US Olympic trials has been cancelled.
The young Richardson went on to apologize to her family, sponsors, and fans, stating she did not know how to deal with her emotions at the time.
Richardson made headlines and won the heart of many sprint lovers when she become the sixth-fastest woman ever at the 100 meters – clocking a time of 10.72sec at a Florida meet in April, at just 21, and was a prime contender to win the 100 meters gold at the Olympics later this month.
