President Bola Tinubu has declined to assent to a bill seeking to extend the tenure and retirement age of legislative officers in Nigeria. The bill aimed to increase their years of service from 35 to 40 and their retirement age from 60 to 65 for both National Assembly members and state Houses of Assembly.
The president’s decision was communicated through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the Senate floor today.
In his letter, Tinubu cited thorough examination and careful consideration as reasons for withholding his assent and expressed appreciation for the Senate’s work on the bill.
The controversial bill has faced opposition since its introduction during previous assemblies and was recently stepped down for further consultation.
