President Muhammadu Buhari has promised that Nigeria will assist the Republic of Chad to stabilize, and return to constitutional order.

Buhari made the promise on Friday at the State House, Abuja, while hosting Lt. Gen. Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the President of the Transitional Military Council of Chad.

According to a statement released by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, President Buhari noted that the two countries are bound together by culture and geography, and Nigeria will help in ways it can.
Speaking further, Buhari stated that Nigerian knows and appreciates the role Chad plays in helping to combat terrorism, and will continue the collaborate with the nation.

President Buhari also added that Chad should not hesitate to ask for help in areas it deemed necessary as the late Marshal Itno was his personal friend, and a friend of Nigeria, and Chad has been very steadfast in defending Nigeria.

Adding that Nigeria would help strengthen the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Buhari also stated that the country will help ensure a smooth transition in Chad in 18 months.

Recall that former President of Chad, Marshal Idriss Deby Itno, died last month, while on a visit to the battlefront between the Chadian military and rebel groups, after which his son, Mahamat Idriss Deby took over the government.
