President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to consider the request for the release of self acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

He made the pledge on Friday after a meeting with a group of leaders from the South East under the aegis of “Highly Respected Igbo Greats”, led by First Republic parliamentarian and former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, at the State House in Abuja.

Describing the situation in the South East as painful and pathetic, Amaechi pleaded for a political, rather than military solution to Kanu’s issue, requesting that if Kanu was released to him as the only First Republic Minister alive, he will be able to pacify him.

In response through a statement by his media adviser, Femi Adesine, the President noted it was an extremely difficult demand with serious implications – as he will not want to interfere in the work of the Judiciary through an unconditional release of Kanu.

The President however, promised to consider the request of the elders nevertheless.

Besides Amaechi, some other Igbo elders in the visiting delegation include: former Anambra State Governor, Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, former President of Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike; and Mr Tagbo Amaechi.
