President Muhammadu Buhari has asked all candidates running for any post to maintain issue-focused campaigns and to treat opponents with dignity, while reminding them that the world is watching the nation to see the outcome of the forthcoming 2023 general elections as he delivered his last Democracy Day speech to Nigerians. . He said that for that to happen, his administration has made significant investment to reform and enhance electoral laws, systems and processes to safeguard votes.

The president, in a speech on Sunday morning to mark this year’s Democracy day, also said that his government is working hard to contain and address the security challenges bedeviling the country and also to ensure that the general elections are safe and secure for all Nigerians. However, he said it is not the duty of the government alone as the citizens should collaborate with the security agencies by reporting any suspicious characters and activities to law enforcement agencies to create a safe nation.

He also said he lives daily with grief and worry for all the victims and prisoners of terrorism and kidnapping.

President Buhari asked Nigerians not to forget the sacrifices of the heroes of Nigeria’s democracy during 1993. He said that their patriotism and peaceful struggle should guide their actions especially when it comes to electing new leaders and to hold them accountable now and in future.
