President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration, a strategic initiative aimed at addressing the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals from Nigeria.
The policy was approved in Council and announced by Professor Pate via his social media.
With a significant number of Nigerian healthcare workers leaving the country due to inadequate equipment, poor working conditions, and low salaries, this policy seeks to manage, harness, and reverse health worker migration. The Minister said that the goal is to retain top talent, especially in rural and underserved areas, ensuring that Nigeria’s healthcare needs are met.
The policy includes the establishment of the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme, regular reviews of working conditions, and the integration of digital health technologies such as Electronic Medical Records and telehealth. It also promotes international training opportunities and incentives for returning diaspora professionals.
The Minister said that President Tinubu’s approval of this policy reflects his commitment to building a resilient and robust healthcare system for all Nigerians.
