Red Cross Distributes 6.5M Naira Worth of Relief Materials to 100 Households in Anambra

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and ECOWAS, has distributed relief materials worth 6.5 Million Naira in cash value to 100 households in Anambra State.

The beneficiary communities which include Ossamalla in Ogbaru L.G.A and Awba Ofemmili in Awka North L.G.A of Anambra State, were among the worst hit during the 2020 flood disaster in the state.

The relief items distributed which include bag of beans, bag of garri, gallon of red oil, gallon of groundnut oil, Blanket, Mat, Tooth brush, Tooth Paste, Slippers, Sanitary pad, pant, detergent, tissue, towel, Soap, Bucket and Cup were distributed to each selected person among the 100 households.

The State Secretary of Nigerian Red Cross Society, Anambra State, Engr Kingsley Okoye, who led the delegation during the flag off ceremony on Tuesday, 28th September 2021, in Ossamalla, Ogbaru L.G.A, explained that the relief materials would help aid beneficiaries to be able to minimize the impact of the flood on their household and livelihood.

Also speaking, the State Communication Coordinator of Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mr Fidelis Ikeji, explained that the distribution which was in response to the 2020 flood disaster in the community, has been long delayed due to the distruption of activities in 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Responding on behalf of the community, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Liason, Hon. Afam Enebeli, thanked the Red Cross and all the partners that made the relief material distribution possible, and promised to take the message of the kind gesture back to the Governor, while soliciting further support to the activities of Red Cross in the state.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Henrietta Odigo, expressed joy at the kind gesture.

She sympathetically narrated how the 2019 floods destroyed lots of her household properties and farm produce and appreciated the red cross for coming to her aid.

Other dignitaries present to witness the flag-off of the relief material distribution include the Director of HR services of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, national HQ Abuja, Mr Uche Okoro and the National Assistant Disaster Management Coordinator, Angela Francis.

Mr Okoro concluded that apart from Anambra State, the distribution is also going on simultaneously in other 16 states of the federation with support from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and ECOWAS.
