Archbishop Anthony Obinna, Archbishop of Owerri, Imo State, has officially announced the safe rescue from the hands of abductors, of Bishop Moses Chikwe, who was forcefully taken away with his driver, Mr. Ndubuisi Robert, on Sunday, December 27, 2020.
Bishop Chikwe and Mr Robert were, according to a statement by Archbisop Obinna, released at about 10:00pm, on Friday, January 1, 2021.
Archbishop Obinna said he personally visited and saw Bishop Chikwe in his residence at about 10.45pm looking and feeling very weak from the traumatic experience.
He said Mr. Robert was, however, rushed to the hospital for treatment for deep cut he received from the kidnappers.
The Archbishop thanked God for His goodness and Mercies and also acknowledged the efforts of the Imo State government, through the Directorate of State Services and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Nigerian Police Force, as well as the Chief Security Office of Anambra State towards the release of the victims.
He further thanked Pope Francis for mentioning the captivity of Bishop Chikwe and Mr.Robert and praying for their release at his New Year Angelus Message at the Vatican just hours before the two regained their freedom.
Archbishop Obinna equally expressed gratitude to the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Antonio G. Filipazzi, for keeping in touch with him and the Vatican authorities during the “painful saga.”
He thanked all the Cardinals, Catholic Bishops, Priests, Religious and Laity in Nigeria and across the world, for fervent prayers and supplication, and all other Christians and people of goodwill for spiritual and humane solidarity during the painful period.
