The House of Representatives has called on the Attorney General of the Federation to propose stricter penalties, including life imprisonment, for those involved in the production and importation of fake drugs in Nigeria.
This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by APC lawmaker Tolani Shagaya during Thursday’s plenary. Shagaya highlighted the growing threat of counterfeit drugs, food, and beverages, citing World Health Organization reports that Nigeria is among the most affected countries.
Lawmakers urged the Federal Government to strengthen regulatory agencies like NAFDAC and the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, enhance enforcement mechanisms, and establish a special task force.
