In a startling revelation for 2023, a recent report has brought to light that cybercriminals managed to pilfer approximately $2 billion in cryptocurrencies through a series of cyberattacks.

The report, released by De.FI, the security firm overseeing the REKT database, sheds light on the persistent vulnerabilities within the cryptocurrency space. It highlights the continuous efforts being made to address these risks and bolster security measures.

In related news, the approval of cryptocurrency by the Central Bank of Nigeria is anticipated to boost government revenue, as indicated by industry operators. However, a separate report unveils a concerning statistic — a staggering $374.6 million was paid to fraudsters in the year 2023.

Adding to the list of cybercrime-related incidents, a court has remanded an alleged WhatsApp hacker over a N700,000 fraud case.

De.FI, in its comprehensive report, commented on the distributed nature of the stolen funds across various incidents, emphasizing the enduring vulnerabilities within the DeFi ecosystem.

Despite a relatively subdued interest in the space during the first half of the year due to the ongoing bear market, 2023 signifies both the persisting challenges and the progress made in tackling them.

It’s noteworthy that the 2023 figures for stolen cryptocurrency reflect a decrease compared to the 2022 record, which witnessed approximately $3.8 billion in crypto thefts.
