In view to a report making rounds on social media that there is a proposal to create Orashi state from some parts of Imo state and Anambra state, the Senate committee of review of 1999 Constitution has debunked rumours that it had proposed the creation of additional 20 states.
In a statement signed by the Senate Spokesperson Chairman, Senate Committee of Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ajibola Bashiru and made available to the public on Sunday, 8th August, the report on social media is a gross misrepresentation of the decision of the committee on the request for creation of more states.
The Senate Committee said that even though it received several Bills calling for creation of new states, it said it is not in any position to recommend or propose the creation of any state unless there is compliance with the provisions of section 8 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria amended.
The Senate Committee said that it had to set the records straight to avoid unnecessary speculations among the citizens and also to avoid heating up the polity.
It called on citizens to disregard the false report online.
In the same vein, the Anambra state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment , C Don Adinuba has described the report about state creation as false.
