The Nigerian Senate has rejected President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to Niger Republic and instead advised him and ECOWAS to seek a political solution to the crisis.
Following the deliberations during a closed-door session that lasted for more than two hours on Saturday, the letter from President Bola Tinubu was raised by the Senate leader, Bamidele Opeyemi. Thereafter, the Senate rejected military action and insisted on engaging with the Nigerian President on resolving the issue.
The resolution was read by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio after the meeting noted that the Senate supports other measures to reverse the coup but opposes military action. President Tinubu had sought approval to mobilize the Nigerian Army to combat the Nigerien coupists, but the Senate clarified that he did not request approval to go to war but that he only sought support for implementing ECOWAS resolutions.
