Plenary has resumed at the Senate after a six- week recess. The recess, which afforded members opportunity to participate in the different party’s conventions and congresses, resumed with at least 70% of the senators losing their parties’ tickets to return to the red chamber..
During plenary, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan revealed the resignation of the majority leader , Senator Yahaya Abdullahi and the Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. According to Lawan, Abdullahi attributed his decision to his defection from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party while he said that Abaribe moved from the PDP to the All Progressives Grand Alliance. It was also announced that the Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Senator Adamu Aliero had defected from the APC to the PDP.
Following that, the Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu relocated both defectors to other seats. However, mild drama ensued as Senators Phillip Aduda, George Thompson and Gabriel Suswan attempted to stop the relocation of Abaribe because he was yet to formally make his decision known but they were stopped by the Senate President.
He told his colleagues who lost in the just concluded primaries to keep up with their good work while he wished those that defected to other parties better opportunities
