State actors have been urged not to stifle the press through hard measures and policies.
This was the submission of a Professor of Mass Communication, Ralph Akinfeleye at the convocation ceremony which held at the NIgerian Institute of Journalism,NIJ.
Akinfeleye said that the other name for democracy is a free press and that the press wants to be the fourth estate of the realm and not the fourth estate of the wreck.
He also cautioned government agencies trying to regulate the media to stop going overboard, as most of the fines are slamed needlessly on media outfits to raise money.
Also speaking at the event, Mr Ray Ekpu,the Vice Chairman of the Governing Council of NIJ, who also chaired the occasion said that the topic for the lecture tugs at the heartstrings as the country has been harrassed by Boko Haram terrorists, bandits, kidnnappers, herders and other assorted criminals.
Mr Ray Ekpu also said that the media have focused on such incidents because it is their responsibility to do so as prescribed by the constitution of Nigeria.
