Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have concluded their seven-day warning strike, as announced on Sunday.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, instructed SSANU and NASU members in a circular to resume work starting today, Monday, March 25, 2024, following the strike initiated on March 18, 2024. The strike was in response to withheld salaries affecting workers in various university departments.
During the strike period, administrative activities were halted across public universities nationwide, with hostels closed, gates locked, and electricity supply disrupted.
SSANU and NASU protested the Federal Government’s payment of withheld salaries to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while neglecting non-academic unions, following the eight-month strike in 2022 that led to a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ by the previous administration.
Accusing the government of unfair treatment and discrimination, SSANU and NASU resumed work after evaluating the impact of their warning strike. They acknowledged members’ dedication and loyalty to the cause and affirmed ongoing efforts to secure payment for the withheld salaries.
The unions pledged to maintain dialogue with relevant government bodies and inform members of future actions regarding their demands.
