In a troubling incident, Libyan authorities detained Nigeria’s Super Eagles players and officials at Al Abaq Airport as they arrived for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. The Nigerian team was diverted to sn airport, over two hours from their intended destination, Benghazi, just an hour before landing.
The Super Eagles media team reported that players and officials were left stranded with their luggage, facing delays due to claims of mistreatment during their previous visit to Nigeria by the Libyan delegation. The Libyan Observer noted that the Mediterranean Knights had a difficult experience in Uyo, where they waited for hours for transportation.
Despite these challenges, the Super Eagles are set to face Libya again on October 15, following their 1-0 victory in the first leg. The situation raises concerns about the treatment of athletes amid international competitions.
